If not God, then what?

    Hi Max.
    Whenever someone religious discovers that I am an atheist, they often ask me this question. If there is no god then what is the explanation for life, the universe and everything?

    If you follow recent developments in quantum physics, there is a possibility that our universe may be one of a VERY large (although I believe not infinite) set of potential universes, As we exist to ask the question it follows that we exist in a universe with the ‘correct’ set of laws to give rise to us and everything we see around us. Based on present scientific knowledge, this may be the best answer available to us until the next idea comes along. In a nutshell, no intelligent being ‘designed’ this universe ; it just happens to be one in a very large set of universes each with their own individual properties.

    In any case, just to retread a point I have made previously, even IF a god existed then even that entity would require an explanation for its existence. Perhaps another god? This would continue ad infinitum so would hardly be a good explanation for the universe.

    Do you, or anyone reading this, have anything to add to this?

      I agree with all you say. Of course, there is the possibility the cosmos has always existed and simple experiences areas of infinite collapses and big bangs – or there is another cosmos parallel to this one which has not been discovered yet – who knows?
      Atheism allows us to ponder and to speculate on all sorts of options. I am very comfortable saying “I do not know” when it comes to such questions. Religion forbids this kind of free thinking. It is one of the many reasons why I feel it is important to stand up to religious claims whenever they are thrown at us.

    If not God, why not believe in something we feel is right for us?

    For instance, I believe in ‘TIME’.

    I would love to term myself as an Atheist. However, I haven’t actually discovered everything there is to it about that term.

    Hence, I though maybe believing in ‘TIME’ would just keep me focused on what I feel is right for me.
